DEAR STUDENTS, Welcome to planetqhe.com, a Math resource is designed for IB Students.

The activities in this website are of two types. The QHE Questions are the ones we'll start each lesson with. QHE stands for :

Question - because they all start with a simple question;

Hypothesis - because you will each form your own hypothesis as to the answer of the question, and

Experiment, since you will be using this webpage to run various on-line experiments.

These experiments are designed to help you shape your hypotheses. You might revise them, refine them or just discard them in favour of a new hypothesis. It's up to you. You will be assigned class and homework time to write up your conclusions, possibly with some of the data you have gathered or other reasons you've found for your conclusion.

The other type are the Essential Questions. They are more general questions. They also refer closely to the IB Math courses and they should form the background to your thinking. Keep them in mind throughout the activities and refer to them in your write-ups of each group of activities. You should use the framework given to you below for writing up these experiments.

WHAT ASSIGNMENTS HAVE I? During these two weeks you will have four assignments to be submitted as follows:

NEW - PLANET presentation day! Tuesday November 14th.

On this day, we will sum up the entire project with a series of presentations. Please sign up for one of the following presentations by Tuesday November 7th:

A - RANDOM - Answer the Essential Questions with reference to the QHE activities and to the relevant reading from the student notes section. CALCULATE THE PROBABILITIES OF EACH PROBLEM.

B - REPRESENTATIVE FALLACY - Explain to the class which one of the activities really explains the Families QHE question and why. Link this to the relevant reading from the student notes section and perhaps the RANDOM activities. Refer to all reading marked with an "R", using this to relate the representative fallacy with the Families activity.

C - COMPOUND EVENTS - Find out about who the Chevalier de Mere was, and present to the class an explanation of the probabilities of winning in each of his dice games. CALCULATE THE PROBABILITIES OF EACH PROBLEM.

D - COMPOUND EVENTS 2 - Choose any two of the activities in this section and present the solutions to the class. CALCULATE THE PROBABILITIES OF EACH PROBLEM.

E - For extra credit - add to your chosen presentation from A-D a description and a critique of the claims made by Smart Luck products (See the Cross-Curricular web links section) , based on your knowledge of random behaviour. This option requires a connection to the internet.

 Your presentation should take no longer than 15 minutes - including time for questions - and should make use of either Word documents (possibly based on your completed QHE templates), Power Point presentations or direct use of the planetqhe.com resources.

(You can also use the whiteboard!)

You may present in a pair, but only if you both take an active part.

Assessment guidelines - the same as those applied within the introductory three weeks. plus of course how well you answer the presentation question that you choose!
